With the advent of the 21st century, concern about global warming and the
depletion of fossil fuel resources has increased dramatically.
Hydrogen energy has aroused considerable interest since 1973 and prompted
government-led R&D programs because of its great potential as an energy
carrier.
Over 97 % of the total energy consumed in Korea was imported from foreign
countries, especially Middle East. It is ranked 10th in the world in terms of
energy consumption. The need for energy conservation and alternative energy is
greater than in any other country indeed.
In Oct. 2003, the Hydrogen Energy R&D Center (HERC) was launched as a
member of the 21st century Frontier R&D Program, which is supported by the
Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST).
The HERC conducts research on key technologies for the production, storage,
and use of hydrogen energy, which is necessary for the establishment of the
hydrogen economy based on renewable energy sources. The results of such
research will decrease our dependence on fossil fuel, thus enabling us to respond
to energy depletion and environmental pollution. Also, the hydrogen related
technologies will enhance the competitiveness of our country and industries for
the future.
